As a native of Colorado, it really baffles me just how much the state has grown up in the last several years. During my time in France everyone would ask me where I was from. When I told them I came from Colorado, they would all snicker and say "Oh, like Doctor Quinn!" I can tell you that the Colorado of today is extremely different from the world of Doctor Quinn, Medicine Woman. Since the millennium the state's population has increased by over 750,000. Once recognized for our vast expanses of land, these are rapidly becoming a sight of the past, but I suppose we can only blame ourselves for this. Colorado has become a highly captivating place to start a life. Louisville, Colorado was labeled the best place to live in Money Magazine's top 100 list for 2011. Apart from Louisville, four other Colorado towns made the list. Quite remarkable, huh? I imagine if we would stop becoming recognized for these types of things we wouldn't have so many newcomers from far and wide. But who wouldn't love looking outside to a spectacular rocky mountain backdrop every single morning? Not only are our towns gaining acknowledgement for the quality of life they provide to their inhabitants, but Colorado is home to many respected businesses. Sugar and Spice, My Holiday Vice
Is it just me, or are Americans infatuated with seasonal flavors? Consider pumpkin spice for example. Towards the end of summer cafes start to offer their pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin cheesecake returns to the dessert menus at diners, and full-bodied beers are released on tap and in liquor stores. I guess there is something about these flavors that moves us into the holiday mood. Other tastes that become more fashionable are apple, caramel, cinnamon, peppermint, and gingerbread, to name a few. Perhaps there is something special about saving these vibrant, pleasant flavors for this season. It gives us something to count on as the weather gets colder and we begin to spend more time at home. Have you ever considered where these flavors came from? Consider cinnamon for example... Cinnamon is native to Sri Lanka, previously known as Ceylon and can be linked back to 2800 B.C. Through history, this spice was so strongly cherished that wars have been fought over it! Used as a sort of money, medicine, for embalming (peculiar, eh?), and an aphrodisiac, cinnamon has been highly valued all over the earth throughout human history. That will give you something to consider the next time you bite into a cinnamon roll! At the beginning of each holiday season I cannot wait to stuff myself full of some seasonal treats for instance a peppermint mocha (though I prefer mine with white chocolate) or a bite of apple crumble. Another of my favorites is gingerbread cake with cream cheese frosting. YUM! I am salivating just writing about this! Thanksgiving Truth In Gifts
Ever since the 19th century, US citizens have commemorated Thanksgiving by duplicating the concept of the pilgrims and the Indians sitting down together for a pleasant feast. As lovely as this concept of friendship might be, it is not true. The record of pilgrims and Indians was one of unwelcome amity. while the Indians furnished the pilgrims with food and expertise to stay alive their first winter the pilgrims gave thanks to them by declaring war and striking them. Even though this is not what we want to picture as we get together to celebrate with our loved ones, maybe it creates a new perspective to the holiday. The pilgrims were greedy and immoral. They took from the Indians and repaid them in the most severe ways possible. Perhaps instead of imitating the idealistic idea of the pilgrims and Indians as companions each Thanksgiving, we should contemplate on the disloyalty the Indians encountered at the hands of their "friends" the pilgrims. Now I don't mean to imply that Thanksgiving should be a formal day of reproach and retrospection, but perhaps we should take the occasion to consider our own relationships. Of all the things we offer thanks for on Thanksgiving, the many people we cherish should be at the very top.

Every time I turn around I'm in need of another manicure, day at the salon, laser hair removal appointment, or waxing appointment. In addition to these forms of beauty remedies, everyday stress pushes me to splurge for bimonthly massage therapy and chiropractor visits and the occasional hot bath. Without doubt the cost of makeup and various other pamper products raise the expense as well. At month's end I've spent the contents of my checking account simply to maintain myself. Speak of stress! Some people choose to get a fake tree to save themselves the price of buying a new one year after year. Others buy energy efficient Christmas lights so they will have a smaller energy bill at the end of the season. And some people choose to relinquish buying the ready made honey baked ham and to roast a chicken at home instead. 
Let's Give Thanks
As the leaves begin to turn and slip from the branches and the air chills warning of the coming of winter, we put aside our shorts and tank tops and get out our scarves and boots. While the cold drop in temperature may be a welcome change from the sizzle of summer, it also reminds us that the days are becoming shorter and we will be spending much more time indoors hibernating. Some folks consider fall their favorite season and it does present many opportunities for celebration and a chance for us to spend time with friends and family as we seek shelter indoors and find ways to occupy ourselves and keep our spirits high. You can also do what we have done for years, and wrap your presents in handmade fabric bags that can used year after year. The disadvantage of these bags is that they are easy to open so someone might possibly peek if they truly wanted to. Choose greeting card printed on recycled paper. You could very well even not bother with the post office this year and send e-card in its place. Avoid the shopping at malls this year. Spending hours trying hard to find the perfect gift wastes tremendous amounts of time and money. You can go shopping online and still buy from local companies as well. Harvest Time 2011
Now that we are half way through the summer months, we start to look forward to the fall. With the changing of the leaves, the chilling of the air, and the shortening of the days, we are reminded of the coming of winter and the end of a new year. But let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. Autumn itself has many of its own merits. For thousands of years, autumn has been the time of year to celebrate the harvest and the gift of food. representations such as pumpkins, gourds, and brightly colored leaves are traditional in the United States as we celebrate Thanksgiving Day and Halloween. As the days get shorter and cooler, we draw our attention from the bleakness of the season and distract ourselves with celebrations of friends, family and food, reflecting on the things we're thankful for. Wouldn't it be nice to show up to Thanksgiving Dinner this year with a little something more than the conventional salad or loaf of bread to share? It would appear as if the custom of giving thanks has become obsolete over time. Mailing a hand written thank you note was at one time traditional for both personal and business situations, but now many people assume it's enough to nonchalantly whip up an email with a prompt thanks before retreating to their active every day lives. Now don't misunderstand me. I understand that the world is much more fast paced than it once was and many people barely have time to relax and catch their breath, but thinking about it, that only gives you that much more reason to send a heart felt thank you. Since we've become less accustomed to receiving a suitable thank you, it makes a much greater impression when we do get one. It truly is a nice surprise to see that someone bothered to say thanks. I haven't even mentioned the effect it can make on your business. In taking the time to send a personalized thank you, you may express to your customer how important their business is to you. By developing personal relationships with your clients, you are guaranteeing their loyalty and giving them a reason to do business with you instead of your competitors. A Little Support To Grow By
It's an fascinating feeling when for the first time in your life, you know what it's like to be poor and cheap. I've become totally used to this lifestyle over the past three years and although it's not convenient, I've learned some useful lessons from it. I've learned what it feels like to live with barely enough money. I've learned what it's like to not be able to manage the most basic things such as groceries, gas, a cup of coffee in the morning, or even a bus ride. I've learned to take charity from others with the hope that one day I can pay them back or pay it forward. I've learned how to stretch a dollar as far as it can possibly go. Welcome Presents from home
Presents from home Gifts When I was a young girl my parents would send me off to camp for the summer. The one thing I looked forward to more than letters from home was a care package from my parents. Some campers got a care package each week packed with junk food, random stuff that would make us laugh, and pictures. Even though I did not receive a package every week like some of the luckier campers, I valued the packages I got more because they were more unexpected and much better made. Since my mother owns a gift basket business, my care packages were never casually tossed into a cardboard box, but instead were presented in a beautiful basket wrapped in bows. Not only was the appearance exceptional, but my mom's company has access to products which you can't buy off the shelves in your local discount store. My packages were filled to the top with gourmet delights including obscure brands of fruit and nut bars, cookies and biscuits, all the best chocolates, rum balls, and snack mixes. I would always share my baskets with my friends and for years after, my camp friends would ask me where my mom had found specific delicacies that they had only ever found in the contents of my camp care packages. Two months ago I moved across the country for school after twenty one years of living nearby my parents. Although real homesickness hasn't set in yet, it has been hard being apart from my friends and family and there are times which are harder than others. A week or so ago I was delivered a surprise package.

June Dad's Day
I can't believe that Father's Day has officially only been around since 1972. It took 4 presidents and a Maine senator to eventually make it an official holiday. Mother’s Day had been around for roughly 60 years by then. Sonora Smart was the first person to recommend Father’s Day to honor her Father who was left to raise his 6 children when his wife died giving birth to their 6th child. It was then recommended to complement Mother’s day in celebrating fatherhood and male parenting. Nowadays Father's Day is celebrated on a range of dates around the globe and typically involves giving gifts, amazing dinners to dads, and family-focused activities. To help in support of Father’s day young members of the YMCA went to church sporting a rose: a red rose to honor a living father, and a white rose to celebrate a deceased one. Perhaps surprisingly enough Father's Day was at risk of disappearing from the calendar while Mother's Day was met with excitement, Father's Day was often met with snickering. Not all dads are exactly alike! OK, so you’re thinking what in the world can I obtain my dad for Father’s day? I don’t live at home any more and have no idea what he wants. You aren’t really considering purchasing a gift card to Lowe’s or Home Depot are you? That’s about as personal as a another wool sweater.

Send An At home spa treatment
A full week of work and courses leaves me ready to take a load off and take it easy when the weekend comes. But we all know that the probability of me planning a weekend full of spa like treatment and peace and quiet is hardly probable. Though I’m not working I always end up with a number of errands that’s piled up throughout the week, a house to clean, and a variety of other miscellaneous tasks that slip themselves into my schedule somehow. While I might be able to talk someone into giving me a five minute back rub, I doubt I’ll have time for a facial and a bubble bath. In our world where we live such hectic lives, it is close to impossible to steal away for an hour or two let alone a full day to just put aside our busy lives and take a little ‘me’ time. Where I can possibly schedule in a chiropractor’s appointment or a waxing appointment once a month, it’s not quite enough to make me feel that I’ve completely pampered myself. When an occasion or a birthday comes around and someone asks me what I want, the first thing that comes to mind is “gift cards” or “a new pair of scissors.” Even though these might be reasonable presents, they are necessities and giving these essentials doesn’t require much thought. A gift should be something you want, not a thing you need. At times we forget our own value and we need a friend to step in and remind us to spend some time on our self. A gift should persuade you to take care of yourself, not help you run yourself further into the ground.

My friend recently tranferred from Rhode Island to Colorado to finish his education half way across the country. He is lucky enough to attend a university with several campuses nationwide which allows him to transfer his credits freely from one campus to another. He did not move because he was unhappy with the campus in Rhode Island or in order to find a new social scene. His sole reason for moving to Colorado was so that his family in California could be resent for his graduation ceremony. My friend is from a large Mexican family and he is the first among them to graduate from university. For his family this means there will be a huge party that may last several days. He will not only be surrounded by loved ones and lots of great food, but he can look forward to the kindness of gifts. Gift giving is an important part of any graduation celebration, because it gives family and friends an opportunity to convey to the graduate that they are proud of them. Giving gifts is a way of showing that you support what the graduate is doing for their self as they arrange for their future. Mother’s Day as we know it is a sort of recent holiday, though it isn't a “Hallmark holiday” established to sell more cards. There are a number of Mothering day or Mom-focused holidays in history which includes Mothering Day in the UK, Cybele in ancient Greece, or Mothering Sunday in much of Europe. Mother’s Day was developed by Anna Jarvis in 1912. Mother’s day was especially chosen to be a singular possessive meaning it was meant for each family to honor their mother, not plural possessive that would be used to remember all the mothers of the world. Following congressional approval, It was officially recognized on May 9, 1914 when president Woodrow Wilson made the official announcement proclaiming Mother’s day as a national holiday to be held on the 2nd Sunday of May. Mother’s Day has ultimately been adopted by many other countries and cultures. In many cases, the date was changed to fit existing celebrations or to concur with a significant date which are for the most part religious. Consequently, Mother’s Day is celebrated in February in Norway and on December 22nd in Indonesia, with a number of other dates in between celebrated by other people. One of the practices of Mother’s Day is to give your mom a present along with good wishes as a way to show your respect to her. If you live near by (and are seeing your mom regularly!) you probably have a good idea what to get her. However, those of us that don’t live close can be at a complete loss. Thank You! It would appear as though the custom of giving thanks has disappeared over time. Sending a personalized thank you note was once habitual for both personal and business circumstances, but now the majority of people presume it's enough to offhandedly whip up an email with a quick "thanks" before getting back to their active day to day lives. Now don't take this the wrong way. Easter today Compared to 100 years ago
The resurrection of Christ is what Easter is all about also making it the ultimate essential of all Christian holy days. However, at this time the meaning of the holiday is covered by decorated eggs and bunnies. Easter can fall at any time between March 22 and April 25 since is occurs the first Sunday following the full moon. Easter is also connected to the Jewish Passover in symbolism and it’s location in the calendar. What’s with Bunnies and eggs and Easter? Well the bunny is a well know sexual image of fertility. Religions associated with Babel relate the rabbit with periodicity, both human and lunar. The Mother Goddess Semiramis (Easter) is related with the moon. Therefore, the Easter rabbit symbolizes the Mother Goddess and is related with once a year Spring time fertility rituals worshiping the Mother Goddess. Colored Easter eggs are a part of the festivities too that came from the egg which was a sanctified symbol among the Babylonians.
